Dilemma #1

Please read the AI dilemma below, discuss the questions and then share with others on our Padelt.

The AI Writing Helper: Right or Wrong?

Sarah teaches English to 13-year-old students. One day, she asks her class to write a story about their favorite holiday for homework.

The next morning, Omar gives Sarah his story. Sarah reads it carefully. The story is very good! There are no spelling mistakes, and the ideas are creative. Sarah is very surprised because Omar usually has problems with writing in English.

"Omar, can you tell me how you wrote this story?" Sarah asks.

"Yes, teacher. I used an AI program to help me write it," Omar explains. "First, I typed in my own ideas about my holiday. Then, the AI helped me make them into a story. I spent a lot of time talking with the AI to get the story just right."

"But Omar, that's cheating!" Sarah says.

"No, it's not!" Omar disagrees. "They were my ideas. I just used the AI like a helper. It took me a long time to finish the story."

Sarah has a difficult problem now. She knows Omar worked hard and used his own ideas. But she also thinks students should write their stories without AI help. She needs to decide what to do.

Questions to think about:

1. Why is this a hard decision for Sarah?

2. What should Sarah do about Omar's story?
